An Exciting New Beginning

I’m so excited to be finally starting this project! It’s been on my to-do list for a couple of months now, and finally I’m at a place where I can get moving on it.

I’ve always loved reading. My parents instilled a love of books and knowledge in me from a very young age. I don’t remember when I read my first book, but I couldn’t have been very old. One of my earliest memories is going to the book-mobile every Tuesday afternoon, even before I started school.  Once I was in school, it was a stop on the way home, and my mom would meet me there with the books I’d finished from the week before so that I didn’t have to carry them all the way to school and then back again.

Summers were a great time for reading too. We spent the summers at the family cottage, and there was pretty much no television. We got a couple of channels from across the lake when the weather was good, but otherwise, it was swimming, fishing, and curling up with a book at night or when it rained. And it wasn’t just me then. Everyone in our family would sit in the living room reading something — newspapers, magazines, comic books, novels — it didn’t matter.  We’d all read, and the lapping of the waves on the shore, the hum of the night insects, and the grandfather owl who  spent his nights in the back lot were all the noise we needed. I still really miss those days.

These days I read every chance I get, and it doesn’t matter what it is. There were too many years between my carefree childhood and where I find myself today, that I wasn’t able to read. Now, if it looks interesting I’ll at least start it and see where it takes me and there’s no one around to tell me I can’t read what I want, when I want. (Yeah there’s a story there, but the telling is definitely for another time and place.)

Enough to say for the moment that I’m really excited to be here. I’ve been hanging out on the periphery of the book blogging community for awhile now and have to say it’s a community that I would love to be a part of. I’m really looking forward to participating in as many of the reading challenges as I can.

This is turning out to be a longer first post that I’d intended. I’ve still got lots of work to do to get everything set up and looking and feeling the way I want, but I know myself. If I waited to do the first post until everything else was done, I’d still be waiting a month from now.

Welcome to the book-blogging community (not that I should be the one to welcome you since I’ve only been here a few months myself). The community, such as it is spread across many platforms — from WordPress.com, WordPress.org, Blogger, LiveJournal — has plenty of opportunities for interaction, from The Sunday Salon, Booking Through Thursday, Friday Finds (which I want to join) and Weekly Geeks, to name but a few. I’ve got involved with a few (see my page for links to these), plus some challenges. The main thing, though, of course, is to have fun and keep on reading (which sometimes keeping up with all the blogging “things” can keep you from doing). See you around the book blogosphere.
